I'm making a trashy small game called Kawaii Gambling. Its a slot machine roguelike where you combine different items to boost your score and feel like you've accomplished something inside a kawaii skinner box.

Here's the vibe of the entire game summed up in a sketch

I am leaning hard into the scumbaggery of the slots industry and really just making a skinner box with the illusion of control with nice looking items and modifiers that I hope will tickle the same part of your lizard brain that AAA games do with their RNG looting systems and make you deeply, truly happy like those games do.Its not gonna be horrible like spooky monsters and stuff but more in a soul rotting kind of way if everything goes to plan.You will feel like you're good at the game, you might even enjoy yourself, but deep down under the superficial graphics you'll know you're hitting a button hoping some lights and graphics pop up. That's the goal anyway.I'm feeling pretty edgy atm. I think its me coming to terms with the illusion of games as entertainment and as a glamour industry that grinds it's intern workforce to an anxious pulp. Reskinning the same mechanics every year with a new footballer's mug slapped on the box art.To sum up and risk sounding rather pretentious (and pessimistic), Kawaii Gambling is my way of accepting the games industry for what it really is.The game isn't really presentable yet, but here's some random things I've made so far:

First implementation of the display for your current run's items.

All the items you have will affect your slot machine's outcome and your winnings. They also display their effects when you hover over them in a satisfying way.

Mouse hover.

I'm gonna work on the actual important bits for a while like making a game loop that feels fun until you actually think about what you're doing.btw you might notice the background changing too, I have a cool system set up for triggering texture changes on the skybox using a material instance and animating it's parameters via blueprints and timelines, so I can change the texture to a pleasing image of money when you win and a picture of a sad dog when you lose.ok bye bye.
